But a visit with a college counselor while taking classes in California pointed out some obvious truths about Downing: He was way too much of a people person to be stuck in some back room at a drafting table; and because of this trait, in the long run, that kind of life would not be a satisfying one. After thinking about it, Downing realized the counselor was right. All of his jobs to date had involved working with people: In the Air Force, at a restaurant, a grocery store. He had to admit, it was true. The counselor suggested a better use of his skill set was a completely different path all together. Downing recalled a conversation with the counselor: He said, Have you ever considered business management? Along with his strong math background, the counselor saw business management as an occupation that would play to all of his strong suits. That revelation was somewhat of a turning point for Downing.
